Darrell has been lifting weights since 1983 and had admiration of being a pro bodybuilder. However, in 1988 he was involved in a car accident. Darrell thought he would never lift another weight ever but the Lakeshore Foundation told him he could join their weightlifting team and he never turned back. In 1992 he went to the Olympic trails but fell short so he gave himself a few years to learn about Powerlifting. In 1998 Darrell won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Spoke Mandaville, England. Darrell is currently training for the 2004 Paralympics. His mind is focused on doing the best Darrell Banks can do! As the Nike commercials say, Darrell's motto is "just do it"! |

Dick Herrick has been involved with the Paralympics since about 1986, sort of as a natural progression from their involvement in the Able-Bodied IPF and the Special Olympic Venues of the Powerlifting World of Sport. To be honest, he remembers earlier involvement in other sports of the IPC but not of an organized nature, or in Powerlifting, until that time. By 1995 he was a Category II International Referee in IPC Powerlifting. In 1998 Dick achieved Category I Referee status, and began the international traveling circuit. Along the way, he and his wife, Stella, built their own family
empire in the sport of Powerlifting, engendering their off-spring
and their spouses into the fray as Referees in all 3 categories of
the sport as well, joining such families as the Kennedy's, building
a legacy of giving. |

IPC Cat II Referee and IWF Referee |
Sophia "Marie" Herrick, like both her brothers, has quite a history in the sport of Powerlifting, beginning as a competitor herself in the late 70's. By 1983 she was the youngest Category II Referee in the world of able-bodied Powerlifting with the IPF. She became involved with the IPC initially on the fray as administrative support to her parents, Dick & Stella, in 1990-1992, at which time she took a break and attended medical school. Then in 1996 she herself suffered a series of strokes. As a part of her rehabilitation her parents took her with them to the various sporting venues in which they were referees, where she was re-introduced to sports as a spectator and volunteer once again. By the time of the 1998 DS/NSF in Connecticutt she was a National Referee for the IPC in Powerlifting. At the 2000 NSF she became a Category II Referee joining her sister-in-law, Cindy, who became a National Referee that year. Marie's drive and committment to the education and support of the physically disabled were fueled and fortified by the efforts of the organizing committee of the IPC Qualifier held last year in Oklahoma. As was her competitive nature. She is proud to announce that she is currently training to walk the Disney Half-Marathon in January 2005 with the American Stroke Association's Team Tampa Bay's "Train To End Stroke" team as the only Stroke Survivor/Competitor for the area. She wishes to thank all those who in the world of Paralympic Powerlifting encouraged her and were vital to her recovery over the last 8 years. People like Bill Hens who sat and talked with her early in her recovery and reminded her that anything was possible, all we have to do is believe and work hard to achieve our goals. |

Just as Dick Herrick, Stella Herrick has been involved with the Paralympics since about 1986, sort of as a natural progression from her involvement in the Able-Bodied IPF and the Special Olympic Venues of the Powerlifting World of Sport. To be honest, they remember earlier involvement in other sports of the IPC but not of an organized nature, or in Powerlifting, until that time. By 1995 she was a Category II International Referee in IPC Powerlifting and Stella became the US IPC Official responsible for Referees under the auspices of Pol Watermartens who heads the IPC Powerlifting. In 1998 Stella achieved her Category I Referee status, and began the international traveling circuit. According to both Stella and Dick, their best memories in
this sport remain those that they experienced while at the IPC Championships
held in Dubai, the United Arab Emerites. On the other hand, their
saddest have been each time they were informed that a long-standing
US IPC Powerlifting competition had been cancelled indefinitely due
to lack of participation. It is their hope that the sport will begin
to re-build itself again in this country. In the meantime, they continue
to travel the world representing the US and officiating at various
International IPC Powerlifting events. |
